Capital of the Périgord Noir, on the edge of the Quercy causses, this historic town is a major tourist site, renowned for its monumental finery dating mainly from the medieval period and the early Renaissance (from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century). It has a world-renowned heritage and is also famous for its gastronomic events. The little village offers plenty to do for a weekend or a longer stay!
THE HISTORICAL HERITAGE OF SARLAT
The capital of the Périgord Noir is known to have the highest density of listed historical monuments. As you walk down through the ancient streets of the medieval city, remember to look up to observe the architectural wealth of the monuments. Sarlat’s architecture dates back from the Middle Ages, it has an exceptional heritage. This is the reason why Sarlat is also very renowned as a movie set: the streets are very ancient-looking and perfect for historical movies. Movies such as Les Misérables by Robert Hossein has been filmed here.
BETWEEN GASTRONOMY AND ART OF LIVING!
Between the shops of producers and regional products, the markets of Sarlat are a must to taste the specialities of the gastronomy of the Périgord! The nerve centre of the city, Place de la Liberté, lined with terraces, is the seat of the market, where the specialities of the region are sold: foie gras, truffles, figs and walnuts. There are a lot of gastronomy-related events throughout the year to discover the “Terroir” of the Périgord. Conviviality and joyfulness are the keywords to participate in these events with your friends, family or partner.
THE PERIGORD NOIR
Sarlat also offers a chance to visit a bit the Périgord Noir, known for its landscapes, castles, rivers, forests, and also similar villages as Sarlat. The Vézère valley, situated in the Périgord Noir, is famous for the classification of its many prehistoric sites as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are the Lascaux caves, but also sites such as Font de Gaume, Cap Blanc. The town of Les Eyzies can rightly claim to be the world capital of prehistory due to the large number of sites it houses, its national museum and its interpretation centre.
