Halloween trick-or-treats: French property!

“That’s good luck for you for the whole year!” were my Grandma’s words when I almost broke my teeth biting into a silver coin hidden in her freshly backed Barmbrack on Halloween in Ireland when I was 8. Thankfully my teeth lived to tell the tale and, as far as I can remember, it was a great year.

Happy Halloween! With the days getting shorter, leaves falling from the trees, the cold setting in, we’re in a transition between seasons and winter will soon be upon us. Halloween or, All Hallows’ Eve has links to both ancient Celtic culture and Christianity; it is traditionally thought to be the time of year when the veil between our world and the after-world is at its most precarious. It is a time of celebration, remembrance and superstition.

In the UK and Ireland, along with the US, a wide variety of Halloween traditions are well and alive. Many of you will welcome trick-or-treaters, dress up, carve pumpkins, eat toffee apples, Barmbrack, do some apple bobbing and many of the other Halloween traditions.
