Le Marathon du Médoc: the French wine race

Save the date! On 13th of September, thousands of thirsty runners will compete in the 30th edition of the Marathon du Médoc.

The 26 mile course runs through prestigious vineyards where competitors will enjoy … red wine stops! The route crosses many famous vineyards, appreciated in France and all over the world for their red wines.
On their race to the finish line, runners will cross not less than 59 vineyards. Some of their names will surely ring a bell: Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour, Château Mouton-Rothschild… So many prestigious wines you must have heard of, and for the luckiest among you, even tasted.

The race starts in the town of Pauillac and makes a loop along the Gironde River. For the runners, there will be 20 wine tasting stops. Of course they will have other stops with different delicacies -because obviously the runners can’t just drink wine during this run- and so there will be oysters before the 24th mile, and then entrecote steaks, French cheeses and finally ice-creams before the finishing line.

And if this race still doesn’t sound like enough fun for you, do not forget that all competitors will be in fancy dress according to the theme chosen every year. This year the theme will be ‘Carnival’. No doubt that the most exotic and extravagant costumes will be out for this event. There will be viewing points and orchestras along the route to make this race truly unforgettable for the runners.

Staff organising the event expect more than 9,000 competitors from at least 50 different countries. Last year, 700 people from the UK took part in the race. So, if you have already planned a trip to the South of France for the beginning of September, why not go in the Médoc and support the runners (in addition to enjoying a glass of fine wine or two)?

This race promises to be a must see event!
