Electricity Producing Geese
There is a new energy revolution in
Dordogne: electricity producing geese!
A foie gras goose farm in the Coulaures department with over 6,000 geese is able to produce electricity from the goose’s faeces. All the excrement is collected and treated in a ‘digester’.

This stainless steel tank can produce up to 400m³ of methane gas a month which continuously feeds a generator with a capacity of 25kWh. The generator produces enough electricity to heat the location where the goslings are kept and the farm was able to sell the remaining 40% of the electricity to EDF. The idea will hopefully serve as an example and inspire other agricultural sectors into doing the same thing. To be able to produce enough electricity you would need to have a farm with 1,500 geese. With
France producing so much foie gras (78% of world production) this method of self producing renewable energy using methane should help reduce the planet’s carbon footprint.
